It was September 1976, I was 16. A couple of friends and I earned a little spending money by parking cars during concerts at
the Convention Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. We directed cars where to park really. Easy money.
All the cars were parked, and we were waiting for our money. The guy drives up in a Golf Cart, pays us, and is about to leave. I asked him who was playing tonight. He said "Elvis," and I said "Cool." He said, "You want to meet him?" I said "Really?" He said "Jump in the cart." My buddies said, "See ya later, Sissy Boy, we don't like Elvis ..." (They were into hard rock at the time).
We go into the rear of the Convention Center. Inside was a trailer which was Elvis's dressing room. I was told to be real cool and not to talk unless I was asked to.
A few other people and I go in. Elvis is sitting in what looked like a
barber chair. I thought he was getting a haircut. But he was actually getting his make-up done.
Each person was introduced to Elvis. I was last and the youngest. Everyone else looked old to me at the time. Elvis asked me "Boy, You know my music?" I said "Yes, sir, I had found one of your records in a ditch once." (Elvis laughs.) "I took it home and washed the mud off of it and played it."
Elvis, laughing even harder now, asked which one it was. I told him it was "Return to Sender." Elvis then starts to snap his fingers and begins to sing "Return to Sender." When he got to the part where the Jordanaires would sing "She Wrote Upon
It," Elvis stopped and pointed at me. I sang it, and Elvis busted up laughing.
He gets up and gives me this big bear hug and a big slap on the back that almost knocked the wind out of me. He was a pretty big guy at this time. Everyone in the room was laughing. I asked him for his autograph. He looked at me a little funny for a second then he reaches down and picks up a make up pencil and a
small Styrofoam cup that had a little water in it. He pours the water out onto the floor and signs the cup and then hands it to me. I was led back outside and that was that.
The cup I took home and put it with my other stuff. After high school, I went into the Air Force. My Dad cleaned out my room.......the cup was never seen again.
Every time I hear Elvis's song "Return to Sender" it is like I am there all over again.
